About Ilminster Carnival
Ilminster Carnival is a vibrant, time-honoured procession held annually in October that transforms our town centre into a glowing spectacle. It’s part of the South Somerset Federation of West Country Carnivals, where dazzling illuminated carts—some stretching up to 100 feet and adorned with thousands of light bulbs—move through the streets alongside majorettes, dancers, and musicians.
When and Where
Save the date: Saturday 4 October 2025, at approximately 7:15 pm, is when Ilminster Carnival will roll through our town, through Silver Street and onto Station Road.
Why It Matters to Ilminster
-
Community Spirit: Carnival entries such as floats, majorettes, walkers, and dance troupes are crafted by local clubs over many months, reflecting our town’s creativity and pride.
-
Engineering & Artistry: Each “cart” is a marvel—often featuring multiple decks, moving parts, choreography, powerful sound systems, and LED lighting innovations.
-
Charity & Fundraising: Beyond the spectacle, Carnival plays a vital role in supporting local causes. For example, in 2023, approximately £2,800 was collected on the night, aiding another year’s festivities and community projects.
A Glimpse into History
The Carnival forms part of a tradition in Somerset that stretches back over 400 years—originally rooted in torchlight processions and Guy Fawkes celebrations—evolving into the radiant festivals we enjoy today.
